Nationally recognized coaching experts to headline statewide Coaching Summit in May

The PSPL kicks off new coaching education program
Nov. 3, 2011 -- The Puget Sound Premier League is proud to announce a comprehensive coaching education program aimed at inspiring coaches to raise their game, to re-energize, to share and to grow.
Jeffrey R. Tipping, former coaching director for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, is on the pitch first. He’ll be kicking off the PSPL inaugural year of special topics, presenting field session on “Striker Performance Exercises” & “Transition for the Modern American Player” on Nov. 15 at Starfire.
The PSPL is creating this new and innovative coaching education program in conjunction with the NSCAA. The league has hired Leigh Cullip, regional NSCAA director, to be the technical director of the PSPL.
“The future of this country’s players lies within the hands of the coaches and players,” Cullip said. “The evolution of the game at the highest level has a trickle effect on the youth game, which in turn means that education at the rec, select and premier level needs its coaches to be qualified, up-to-date and enthusiastic. It’s vital we put coaching education at the forefront of everything we do.”
The PSPL’s program will have four distinct components designed to meet the needs of the recreational, select and premier coaches. We want to make coaching education affordable, more accessible and a collaborative learning experience.
The four components include:
- PSPL Special Topics at Starfire twice a month beginning with Tipping in November.
- Broader access to NSCAA licensing courses in English and in Spanish, including offering a National and Advance National diplomas here.
- Open Issaquah Soccer Club’s current Coaching Education seminars to PSPL coaches—seminars aimed at the “D” level coach and lower.
- Organize a three-day Coaches Summit at Starfire May 18-20 that will attract nationally recognized coaches.
The Puget Sound Premier League has been growing rapidly over the past three years – from just 12 teams in 2007 to 70 clubs and 694 teams in 2011. The PSPL is a non-profit organization whose mission is to develop competitive soccer in Washington. Sanctioned by US Club Soccer, the PSPL offers a wide range of competitive divisions for U11-U18 as well as offers U8-U10 development leagues.
The PSPL promotes coaching education, emphasizes player development and supports open competition. The PSPL hosts the Washington Cup, an annual statewide competition for U10-U18 teams, invitational tournaments and the Pacific Coast Super Cup, a regional college showcase invitational for U13-U18 teams. The PSPL is also a founding partner of the Pacific Coast Super Cup and the Northwest Champions League.
“The expansion of the PSPL means we need to expand the educational base for the league,” said Stanley Holmes, PSPL executive director. “With the game evolving the need for education is evolving, too. We want to be at the cutting-edge of new ideas on player development, new ways to lift the coaching bar for all coaches at all levels. We hope to design courses and topics that are relevant, dynamic and inspiring.”
A sampling of PSPL Special Topics, which will cost $20 per coach, include:
